Baby Charlie

A post went out on FB. Someone down in San Diego had picked up a mare from auction and she had just foaled.  The family did not want her colt and he was slated to go to auction that weekend.  I connected with someone in San Diego who went to see the baby and said he was a cute colt.  Andy was about a year old at the time and needed a friend.  I said I would take him.  The owner trailered him up with his mom.  She pulled up, unloaded Momma and Baby C into the stall, reloaded Momma and left.  Momma was extremely skinny, but we could not take her, they wanted her for their daughter.  Baby C was extremely distraught.  It was horrible and pathetic.  No weaning should happen like this.  We knew Duette had been a Momma and was on the smaller side.  Baby C is Appy/ Pony cross.  We had to try it, we put Duette in with Baby C.  He took to her right away.  She let him "nurse" even though she had no milk.  It was the physical contact he needed.  Baby C calmed down, Duette was the perfect "Momma".  Later on when he was ready we "weaned" him. He did much better.  Baby C will be gelded this winter, he is 2 years old, and ready for a new home to spoil him and  start him as a potential kids pony!
